Description of Nuctenea umbratica (Walnut orb weaver)

Physical Characteristics

Female 13 to 16 mm.
Abdomen built remarkably flat. Colour reddish brown to dark brown with a black leaf-shaped figure and two rows of dents.
Carapace black-brown with light brown hairs.
Legs and palps black-brown with light brown annulations or spots.

Male 7 to 10 mm.
Markings almost identical to the female, but darker. Remarkably long legs.

Habitat

Narrow crevices and hollows in trees and buildings.

Distribution

Very common in the whole of Europe.

Period

Summer and autumn.
