Description of Thanatus formicinus

Physical Characteristics

Female 7 to 12 mm.
Abdomen light brown to grey-brown with a clear, black cardiac mark which is surrounded by a thin white border. At the rear sometimes two thin black curved lines.
Carapace light brown to grey-brown with a light median band.
Legs light brown to grey-brown with a few black spots.
Palps light brown to grey-brown.

Male 5 to 7.5 mm.
Markings almost identical to the female, but generally darker coloured.

Habitat

Warm, dry areas on the ground and in low vegetation

Distribution

Occurs in the whole of Europe, but not common.

Period

Spring and summer.
