Description of Scytodes velutina

Physical Characteristics

Female 5 to 6 mm.
Abdomen dark brown to black.
Carapace brown to dark brown with two black longitudinal stripes and faint dark radial stripes.
Legs and palps brown to dark brown.

Male 3 to 4 mm.
Markings and colours almost identical to the female.

Habitat

Dry and sunny areas under stones or in the shadow.

Distribution

Occurs in the Mediterranean area.

Period

Summer, autumn and winter.

Notable

Besides the dark colour variant mentioned above, there is also a light colour variant. The markings are the same. The light colour variant is sometimes referred to as Scytodes delicatula. However, this is a synonym and not a separate species.
